The performance came at the end of a triumphant set of some of Kylie’s greatest hits. To a crowd of 20,000 people, Kylie also performed the classics Spinning Around, Get Outta My Way, Supernova, Your Disco Needs You, Slow and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.
“You’ve been incredible tonight, thank you so so much. We have so much love for you! I have a little surprise,” Kylie said before Dannii appeared on stage behind a group of backup dancers. The famous sisters hadn’t appeared on stage together since 2015 when Kylie surprised audiences with Dannii as a guest during her series of Christmas shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The global event was peppered with star-studded performances, including British singer Charli XCX – who treated fans to hits including Boys, Vroom Vroom and Beg For You – and Australian artist Jessica Mauboy. Australian singer Casey Donovan and much-loved Drag Race alumnus Courtney Act hosted the spectacle’s opening ceremony.
As well as entertainers, the event was attended by politicians eager to share a message of positivity. The New South Wales arts minister, Ben Franklin, used his moment on stage to announce the Perrottet government would allow Sydney’s queer museum Qtopia to make the former Darlinghurst police station near Oxford Street its “permanent” home, after the state had earlier resisted lobbying to relocate NSW Health administration functions from the building.
Franklin told the crowd this was an “unprecedented time of freedom and diversity”, that the LGBTIQA+ community could “breathe a sigh of relief”.
