Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson has spoken to Total Guitar about the importance of staying grounded and the band’s desire to not be easily defined.

Thomson said, “It shouldn’t be too easy to digest or even categorise.

“When we did Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses, I was listening to a burn of rough mixes in my car in Des Moines. The guys in the band Cephalic Carnage were playing in Des Moines that night, so I was playing the songs for one of the guys in the band and he was like, ‘This is just so different. What is it? It’s metal, but it’s not metal. How do you define it?’

“And I said, ‘Stop trying to f****** nail it to a wall as something and just enjoy it as music!’ You don’t have to put yourself in a narrow type of pigeonhole, and that’s what I love about metal more than a lot of other music. You can draw from a lot more places. Punk always sounds like punk, but metal can go in a million different directions.”

Meanwhile, Slipknot singer Corey Taylor has been interviewed by the Guardian. When asked whether the band’s festival Knotfest will be coming to the UK Taylor replied, “We almost did it and then the damn pandemic happened. We were working with people that we’d done various great British festivals with and then, all of a sudden, it all went to shit. It’s definitely something we want to circle back to, but a lot of our plans got put by the wayside: there’s so much we have to do first to rebuild everything.”

When asked what his musical guilty pleasures are, Taylor said, “I don’t feel guilty about anything I listen to. Why would you feel guilty about something you enjoy? Unless it’s illegal and gross [laughs]. I listen to Slayer and Samantha Fox, Abba and Anthrax; I have Cardi B right next to Carcass. If I like it, I like it.”
